April Quiet Day: Hills of Prayer and Truth

The Quiet Day will spend time on two hills outside Jerusalem which play an important part in the final days of Jesus – Olivet and Calvary. An opportunity to prepare yourself for the approach of Easter in the company of our Lord and Saviour.

Our facilitator, John Rackley, has been in both locations on a number of occasions and will bring his own experiences to supplement the voice of Scripture and Christian devotion.

          John Rackley

          Revd John Rackley

John Rackley has been in Baptist ministry as pastor and university chaplain for 40 years and is a former President of the Baptist Union. He worked for the BBC on local and national radio. He lives in south Leicestershire and is Associate minister at Christchurch LEP Clarendon Park. At Launde he belongs to the College of Chaplains and is a tutor on the Holy Listening course. He also acts as a supervisor and director for the Leicester Diocese Spiritual Direction network. He writes for the Bible Reading Fellowship Guideline and Reflections series; most recently in the latter on the spirituality of Autumn. Inhabiting the Bible through story: The use of Imagination for Interpreting the Bible ***FULLY BOOKED***

***FULLY BOOKED*** Inhabiting the Bible through Story: The use of Imagination for Interpreting the Bible: A Retreat Led by Dr Paula Gooder.

During this retreat, we will explore what using imagination contributes to our reading of Scripture and what is lost when we don’t use it in our reading.  There will be input reflecting on imagination and what it brings to our understanding of scripture and lots of time for personal reflection.

                About Paula:

Paula Gooder is a speaker and writer on the Bible, particularly on the New Testament. She began her working life, teaching for twelve years in ministerial formation first at Ripon College Cuddesdon, Oxford and then at the Queen’s Foundation for Ecumenical Theological Education in Birmingham.  Following this she spent around eight years as a speaker and writer in biblical studies travelling the country and seeking to communicate the best of biblical scholarship in as accessible a way as possible, after that she spent six years working for the Bible Society as their Theologian in Residence and then for the Birmingham Diocese as their Director of Mission Learning and Development.  She is currently the Chancellor of St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

Holy Week with the Launde Abbey Community

Stay and pray as part of the Launde Abbey Community in Holy Week.

The days of the week will be structured around participation with the community in our daily services and each day will focus on one of the stories that leads towards the crucifixion and beyond. Each day will work as a stand-alone for those on 24-hour retreat, as well as a series through the week.  There will be no led retreat addresses but some prompts for how to spend this special time.

We want to make it as easy as possible for you to step aside for a while to dwell on the stories of this most significant week for Christians.  So you can come for as much or little as of the week as you like, to travel with us or to dip in for a while.

We are still planning the details of what this will look like so bookings are not yet open.  Please check back in later in the autumn, or watch out for news in our mailings and on social media.

Textiles Retreat: ‘Gardens: Gardens in the Bible, God as Gardener’

Join us in August 2025 at Launde Abbey for a refreshing and creative retreat focused on ‘Gardens: Gardens in the Bible, God as Gardener.’

This isn’t just a sewing getaway—it’s a time where stitching, talks, prayers, and poems all come together. As you work with your hands, your mind is free to reflect and connect with deeper spiritual themes in a peaceful, supportive environment.

Everyone is welcome, whatever your skill level! You are also welcome to bring your own sewing project.  We recommend that any sewing machines used should have been PAT tested within the last three years.

Rev'd Claire Good - Launde Abbey ChaplainClaire is an experienced parish priest and retreat leader who has been leading retreats at Launde Abbey for many years. Claire was also one of the team offering Spiritual Direction (Spiritual Accompaniment) and Mentoring in Southwell & Nottingham Diocese. She has been sewing ever since she can remember – she had her first sewing machine age 9 years and has recently studied for a City and Guilds Patchwork and Quilting Certificate.
