Jesus said, “I Am The Gate”
Meeting God at thresholds and crossing places
In this retreat, we will explore places of encounter, places of change, places where change happens ‘whether I want it to or not.’ We will do this with creative prayer, poems, reflections and quiet.
There will also be an opportunity to do some creative stitching – possibly a landscape, or a traditional patchwork design, such as ‘Attic Windows’ or a piece of your own choosing. Claire will bring some additional fabric and haberdashery with her.
Revd Claire Goode
Revd Claire Goode was most recently a Chaplain at Launde Abbey. She is an experienced parish priest and retreat leader who was most recently the Vicar of a city centre church in Nottingham. Claire was also one of the team offering Spiritual Direction (Spiritual Accompaniment) and Mentoring in Southwell & Nottingham Diocese. She has been sewing ever since she can remember – she had her first sewing machine aged 9 years and has recently studied for a City and Guilds Patchwork and Quilting Certificate.

At Christmas we declare Jesus to be the light that shines in the darkness. But it is the stories of Jesus traditionally read through January, in the season of Epiphany, that start to unpack what that might look like. In this darkest season of the year, we will reflect on the Light revealed both in these stories and in our stories, and explore what God’s Spirit might be saying to each of us through them as 2023 begins.
This retreat will be led by The Revd Chris Webb, Deputy Warden of Launde Abbey.
Chris is an Anglican priest and Benedictine new monastic community member. He has ministered as president of a spiritual formation ministry in the USA, as a parish priest in Wales and in a church for the homeless. He is the author of two books: The Fire of the Word (2011) and God-Soaked Life (2017).
Retreat price: £295 includes en-suite accommodation, all meals, and all retreat resources.

Join us for this five day icon painting course with experienced iconographer, Peter Murphy.
The course takes place in the prayerful and meditative atmosphere of one of the oldest and most beautiful retreat houses in England, which has its own medieval chapel. Over the course of the week, students will learn to gild and paint on a specially prepared wooden panel using traditional medieval techniques and materials.
All materials, including gold leaf and pigments are included in the fee. Each course starts with an Anglican Eucharist, which all course participants are welcome to attend, and there is an opportunity to join in other services if required.
Peter Murphy was born in Leeds and was educated at the University of East London. He trained with iconographer Guillem Ramos Poqui in London. He was Vice Chairman of the Society of Tempera Painters and is a member of the British Association of Iconographers. He has been commissioned by a number of churches in the UK and has also been employed by a number of museums and has recently undertaken three major commissions for Hereford Cathedral. Exploring the depths of prayer; newly-discovered writings from the seventh century Isaac the Syrian by Andrew Mayes guides this retreat. (Andrew’s book won a first-place prize in the 2022 Catholic Media Association Awards!)
These astonishingly beautiful texts invite us to leave the shallows and plunge into the deep waters of prayer. “There”, says Isaac, “we may discover in the ocean of grace pearls of new insight and fresh intuitions of God.”
This retreat beckons us to relax, enjoy God’s creation and to allow ourselves to sink gently into the beckoning waters of contemplation, where we open our hearts and minds to fresh discoveries of God – and of ourselves.
Andrew Mayes was formerly Spirituality Adviser both to the diocese of Chichester and the diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf. He has worked for some years in Jerusalem, and is the author of 12 spirituality books. A Franciscan and Anglican priest, Andrew delights in imagery and metaphor that takes us into the deeper reaches of prayer.
Early bird price: £395 if booked before 5th July 2022. Full price £415.

Jesus’ journey to towards the cross drew together a complex of threads into a single, striking tapestry: a challenge to the Roman authorities, a provocation of the religious leaders, a self-denying call to his followers, and a cosmic struggle with the powers of evil and darkness. During this retreat we’ll be walking the road to Calvary as we trace the story in the gospels through reflections, prayer, meditation and silent contemplation. And we’ll consider how we can walk in the footsteps of Christ in our own troubled times.
