A powerful narrative packed with humour and characters, and interwoven with haunting, scene-setting traditional song and snippets of the Lark Ascending, New World Symphony, Land of Hope and Glory, the Londonderry Air, it is the story of a young man’s childhood and awakening, the young violinist and poet, Laurie Lee.
The audience is taken deep into the life of his closed, rural community, a village emerging from the impact of the First World War … a time of dramatic social change, with the last of the ‘bonneted and booted’, the village school ‘stuffed to the gunwales with wild boys and girls’ and the first clatter of the motorised vehicles, rich moments in this evolving village life.
